Maleficent was the 13th fairy at the baptism of the princess in the Brother's Grimm fairy tale Little Briar Rose (also known as Sleeping Beauty). She was not invited and, being miffed by this, gave the following gift: "When the child reaches the age of 15 she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel's needle and die." The 12th fairy promptly amended the curse to be a coma broken by the kiss of a worthy man (the king himself tried and failed, hmmmmm).
